So the CD drive is fine when you're just looking for files on the CD, but when you try to play music or a game, you get a codec error? It was running fine before?
It is possible that a windows update compromised the codecs you had on your computer and that you'll need to update them. You can go to Microsoft or Download.com to download the latest media codecs.
Try installing the K-Lite codec pack. This installs many of the required codecs for your system. It is available from: http://www.free-codecs.com/K_lite_codec_pack_download.htm. The standard version should get you covered.
